Lesson Objectives

  • Consider various forms of media (origins of radio and resurgence of podcasts).

  • Actively listen to an episode of a podcast.

  • Reflect on emotional response and impact a podcast from a penitentiary can have on inciting change for people who may otherwise hold preconceived notions of those incarcerated.

 

Materials Needed

Introductory Lesson (PowerPoint)

Students will need access to computer/cellphone for research.

Speakers to listen to episode.

Reflection Document

 

Activities

  • Intro: Research the history of radio communication as a form of media.

  • Through: Listen to the episode as a class. The teacher should pause to discuss and clarify as necessary. Students complete reflection.

  • Beyond: Share feedback with class. Reflect on the greater impact of a podcast produced in a penitentiary setting.
